There are a ton of ways to be involved in the Steel Bridge team here at UW Madison. Here’s a breakdown major-by-major for how Steel bridge applies to all engineers. Contact us via email at steelbridgeuw@gmail.com or come to one of our meetings to learn more.
Civil Engineering:
- Structural engineering: is the primary focus of the design. The idea is to figure out how to distribute the load of 2500lbs through the bridge to the feet with the minimal amount of deflection.
- Construction Management: The Steel Bridge competition success is driven by a solid schedule with defined deadlines to be met. A project manager is almost essential for our team to succeed.
Mechanical Engineering / EMA
- Connections are crucial to the performance of the bridge and the speed of construction runs. The design and fabrication is a huge part of the year for the team.
Electrical / Computer Engineering
- While load testing our bridge, we use a multitude of sensors.
Industrial/Systems
- Construction time makes up half of our score during competition. A good system of putting together the bridge greatly impacts the overall results of our team.
